An oral health educator has an important and valuable role within a dental practice to promote good oral health care and work with patients to help prevent oral disease.

The NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education is specifically designed to equip a Dental Nurse wishing to develop professionally to become an oral health educator, with the knowledge and skills required to be able to effectively deliver oral health care messages, educate various patient groups and have the ability to adapt information and communication to the specific needs of the patient.

Who is it for?
Registered Dental Nurses who wish to further their knowledge and specialise in Oral Health Education, enabling them to take a more active role in the promotion of Oral Health.

After successfully passing your ROC and achieving a required 76% in your mock examination you will be entered into the NEBDN exam.

What Is Involved

The post graduate course in Oral Health Education combines a mix of theoretical learning and evidence based practice. This 9 month qualification is blended learning and you will be fully supported by our course tutor Abbie. Abbie qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2015 from Cardiff University and is currently in her 2nd year of dentistry at Bristol university. Abbie has a passion for oral health education and is thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to extend her knowledge and expertise to prospective dental nurses.

Timetable

Our timetable consists of a fortnightly session, combining online and face to face tutorials at our centre in Dudley.

To achieve the NEBDN Oral Health Education qualification you will be required to complete a work-based Record of Competence (RoC) to include:
• Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS)
• Case study
• Supplementary outcomes

Your practical competencies will include patients from the following target groups:

Patient Groups

Pregnant/nursing mothers
Parents of preschool children (4 and under)
Parents of primary school children (5 – 11)
Adolescent (12 – 15)
Adult (16 – 64)
Seniors (65 and older)
Special Needs / Medically compromised

After successfully passing your ROC and mock examination, you will be entered into the NEBDN exam.

NEBDN offers biannual examination dates in March and September of each year. The online exam duration is 90 minutes and consists of two parts.

You will be fully supported in the preparation for the exam and will be provided with revision sessions and resources to consolidate learning throughout the programme.

You will need to be supported by a workplace supervisor/mentor throughout your qualification who can provide assistance and feedback on your workplace activities. (guidance available for workplace supervisor/mentor)
